Inspiration and Creation
Cirque-tacular~ SDS was produced and created as a fundraising gala performance to benefit honorary troupe member, Carolyn Pioro.
In 2005, Carolyn, a dear friend and talented member of the Toronto circus industry, fell from the flying trapeze while rehearsing for a national tour with an unnamed circus troupe. Her accident resulted in a severe spinal chord injury and permanent paralysis. Cirque-tacular was created as a benefit production to help raise funds for Carolyn and for spinal research. In the rehearsal stages of production, Carolyn was brought in as co-artistic director. Below is a message from Carolyn excerpted from the show playbill of the first annual Cirque-tacular fundraising extravaganza held on March 29th 2009:
"But you see, just we’ve been…dealt a certain hand…it doesn’t mean that we can’t choose to rise above –to conquer the boundaries of a destiny that none of us wanted." Meyer, Twilight*
A circus performer needs two qualities above all else: strength and grace under pressure. All these performers in today’s show have these, and combined with their artistic and creative abilities, they’ve put together quite the event. It is indeed Cirque-tacular. I know you are going to enjoy it.
Strength (and not just the physical kind) and grace under pressure are also characteristics that continue to serve me today while I face the challenges unique to a person living with a spinal cord injury. During the three and a half years since my accident, there have been many hurdles to overcome: getting off a ventilator in the hospital, learning how to drive an automatic wheelchair and mastering the assistive devices that aid in my daily independence. And there are many things that I haven’t yet overcome, but your support today will help knock down those barriers.
Cirque-tacular is a beautiful collaboration and the first of it’s kind. This initiative will grow and expand into a yearly event bringing awareness to spinal cord injury research. The dream is of course to find a cure for paralysis. Every day, it does get a little closer. Your support will also help make that dream real.
And on behalf of everyone involved, I would like to thank all the sponsors helping this special event to succeed.
The sponsors include the following: DeAngelis Entertainment, CSRO, Polson Pier, Village Bistro, The Merchants of Green Coffee, Dorgel Desserts, The Flipside, Event Fusion, and Grape Brands Wine.
- To Julie, Elisa, and Sam, whose passion, expertise and beauty radiates not only through their performance, but through their organization of today’s wonderful event.
- To the ensemble of gifted acrobats, actors, dancers and musicians who put forth so much commitment and talent. You guys rock!
- To the crew and volunteers for their time and effort.
- And finally to you, the audience –an assembly of family, old friends, new friends, and soon-to-be friends. The event certainly could not have been a success without you.
In a sense, your help today is creating a safety net for me, as a circus performer often has below her as she performs.
Thank you for building my safety net,
With strength and love,
Carolyn
* Okay. I’m ready for all the teasing that I’m bound to face for using the Twilght quote, but seriously, the handsome vampire sums up my sentiments succinctly. However, I hereby relinquish any of my remaining street cred!
AND THE GRAND TOTAL IS…$7500.
Cirque-tacular March 29, 2009 was successful in raising $7500.00 which will go towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art wheel chair custom designed for Carolyn Pioro.
